Our Philosophy

There are many influences that drive the philosophy of Peace Through Play Nursery School.  One is the book “Putting Children First” by Elizabeth Erwin, Ed.D professor at Montclair State College.  Another is “Because We Can Change The World” by Mara Sapon-Shevin, Ph.D and professor at Syracuse University, and most recently a book called “Child Honoring” by the world renowned children's artist and entertainer, Raffi Kervokian.  These three influences speak so beautiful about how to create an inclusive world that honors, respects and is devoted to the rights of all children.

The philosophy of this program focuses on giving children every opportunity for language acquisition and development through socialization activities and staff and child modeling. Circle time provides an important opportunity for this program to expose children to appropriate language utilized daily in the school, not only for the developmental goals and use of materials but also the language of peace and conflict resolution – giving children the words they need to negotiate the world. This is reflected in the songs we sing, discussions we have and using the Peace Pole at the closing of each circle.
