The curriculum of Peace Through Play Nursery School draws on the Peace Education philosophy of Maria Montessori who actually coined the phrase "Peace Education".
For us that means that we provide children with fun and engaging activities that give them some good tools for learning how to be in the world. We also incorporate all the great teaching skills, ideas and concepts that prepare children cognitively, emotionally and socially for the next stages of life. These include novel art experiences, dramatic and imaginary play, challenging cognitive materials (puzzles, science activities, an array of books, varieties of blocks, pre-reading and writing experiences) plenty of outdoor physical activity, walks in the woods - and lots of music! We make sure children are ready for their next school experience.
There are two areas of the school where children can learn about different aspects of how science works, but our playground and woods also provide a wonderful environment for learning about the natural world. Turning over logs and rocks, looking for worms and discovering the beauty of nature are always at our fingertips.
Block building is math, making play dough is math, planting flowers is math. But Peace Through Play also incorporates formal math activities and materials for children to count, recognize numbers and learn one-to-one correspondence.
Books are everywhere at Peace Through Play to enhance learning in each area of the school your child plays in. Children participate in group reading time where every child has the same book and follow the story together. Stories are acted out as well as turned into art projects.
